The Ordinance Survey Map of Belfast (Bloomfield) 1902 has a J.C.M BROWN, architect and civil engineer living at Holly Park. This was brought to my attention courtesy of Margaret Innis. This accords with Dorothy's memory of visiting Holly Park as a child. The house is just across from the St. Columba's Church where my grandmother was married and just down the street from Albertvillas, a house which was owned at the time by another brother, John Plunkett BROWNE. It is possible that Holly Park was the home of John & Susanna BROWNE before they retired to Ardglass. In the 1901 census, he is shown as residing at house #55 Sandown Road, Pottinger, Co. Down (which is in Hollywood Parish). He is described as the head of the house, and is an architect & C.E. and is living there with his aunt Jane, brothers John, Martin, and Hugh and sister Jeannie. There are no other residents in the five room house which is owned by a John Quigley. At the time, the parents were living by themselves in Tullycarnon, Ardglass, Co. Down. There were no other residents in their home. By 1902, he is living in a house called Holly Park which is on King's Road right across from St. Columba's Church. To the west of the property, is an open space which now has houses built on it. |
